Shipping Yarn to Israel

Jennifer mentioned Elann.com as a good site for buying yarn online. I’ve never purchased anything other than books from abroad, and I’m afraid of the customs issues.

Does anyone know what the actual rules are regarding “importing” of yarn and knitting accessories? What is the maximum amount allowed? Do the postal employees have any sense of cost, or do they just let it through?

Although I’m not in a financial situation to buy much yarn, I’d like to buy from E-Bay so I’d like to know the rules.

  1. Well, don’t send packages of more than 500gm at a time. I found out the hard way when I ordered a few sweaters’ worth from a shop in England. The first two packages came without Customs. By the arrival of the third, fourth and fifth packages (from the same address) Customs was onto the fact that there were several packages and I got slapped with about 200 NIS to release the last three. Still not too bad, though, given the cost of the yarn.

Never the less, I always take an extra suitcase when I travel abroad. :)

  2. The rule is $50 maximum free from MAM. This also includes the postage. Anything above that total is subject to MAM plus any other charges like that war in Lebanon. This rule applies to charitable items as well.
