Make your own double pointed needles

I’ve started making my own double pointed needles (small ones 2.75 mm) for socks and the like. I purchased a large package of bamboo “shipudim” skewers, and sanded away. They feel great, but they aren’t as smooth as I would like

After looking at the website for Micro-Surface I think this might be the way to go. Has anyone ever used anything like this?

If you are looking for information on making your own needles. Here are some good sites.

Knitty Summer 2006 is UP!!!!

Hey Knitty Fans, take a look at the new issue of the wonderful online Knitting Magazine Knitty!

I’m very happy to see that my favorite Yarn Boy has posted a pattern for his hat Halfdome. I saw pictures of it on his website, and wanted to make it, but then I saw he was doing the pattern for Knitty, so I knew I’d just need to wait.

Anybody know a good Israeli substitute for Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran?

Bye bye Happy Wool

Apparently the website for Happy Wool has been shut down until further notice. This is sad news for Israeli wool enthusiasts. If anyone has more information, please share it with us.

Knitting Author Coming to Visit:

Laurie Kimmelstiel writes:

I will be in Israel in early March and would like to meet with knitters. I am the co-author of Exquisite Little Knits (Lark 2004) and will be giving a lecture on knitting and design at Shenkar College. Would love to do a workshop elsewhere in Israel. Any suggestions? I will also have bamboo and rosewood needles and some fabulous natural fiber yarns.

Information for the Wool Dyers among us

If anyone out there is interested in dyeing yarn, but doesn’t know where to start, many sites talk about dyeing with koolaid. Apparently the colors are great, and it is a non-toxic way of dyeing yarn.

I’m not sure if you can get Koolaid here in Israel, but if not, here is a place
in the UK which sells Koolaid internationally…and they even have a clearance section for dyers.

Solution for Felting for those with front loading washers

Here is a good product that would probably work well for those who do lots of felting. It is a little washing machine which you drain yourself. Since you put the water into it, I assume you can put in as hot as you want. Anyone know anything about these??

צמר טדי TeDdY´s Wool - הכי צמר שיש

All you Israeli Knitters….now we know a bit more about Teddy’s Wool…. Here is their site:צמר טדי TeDdY´s Wool - הכי צמר שיש.

It isn’t the greatest stuff in the world, but it does the job, and the prices are reasonable. Even if you don’t use Teddy, it is worth checking out this site, because they list all the stores in Israel that stock their yarn. This means that many of these places also stock other yarns!

So far from their line I’ve used Sympatic and Charisma. Anything you like or dislike of their line?

Meeting Status for November

Here is an update on the meetings:

Har Hatzofim (Hebrew University): We had a small group last Thursday, and will be meeting again on the 24th of November from 12:15 to 13:00. It looks like we will start out as a teaching group, so we might be trying to all do one project. My suggestion is the Zeeby bag (or any other basic bag). The meetings will be changing to Wednesdays in December.

Night meeting: As you can see we still don’t have a meeting site, but I still believe we will be meeting this Tuesday night (Nov 15th from 20:00-22:00. Beit Ticho and Tmol Shilsom can’t host us this week, and AACI will charge us, so we might as well go someplace with food :) If anyone has a favorite cafe or hotel lobby they are willing to call, please do it now!!!!

One shopping note: the store “Avoda Ivri” by the Central Bus Station has a nice display, and lots of yarn, but they are more expensive than the Shuk and the man who runs it smokes in the store. Someday people will understand……
