Jerusalem Knitting & Craft

Here is a message from Haya of the 60+ Club:
Our Knit 'n Nosch group that meets every Wednesday morning (except holidays) from 10 AM to noon, in the classroom of the 60+ Club, over the library on Recanati St. in Ramot Bet, Jerusalem. There are stops of the 34,36 and 32 Egged bus lines close by. In Hebrew, our name is "Srigah v' sandvitchim" though our 11 AM tea and coffee break is more likely to include home baked cookies, crackers with cheese or houmous, fresh fruit, vegetables and/or pretzels than sandwiches.
Our meetings are conducted in Hebrew with simultaneous translations to English,German, Roumanian,Spanish, French etc. for any individual who is not fluid in Hebrew. This does not describe all our language skill because, for example, I purchased a Danish knitting book when recently visiting my son and his family in Copenhagen, and on the day I brought it in to share with our members, a new member who made aliyah from Denmark, joined us and has been translating instructions from that book ever since.
Since our members come from different countries, we share different styles of knitting--eg. those from South American and Morocco, prefer to knit on a pair of long straight needles, tucking the one from which the stitches are being taken up on the active needle, under their left arm pit. Knitting on circular needles (which I prefer) or sets of 4 or 5 double pointed needles feels awkward and slow to these knitters who work at quite a speed in their traditional style.
Some only crochet, others only knit, some prefer bulky yarns, other delicate fillet crochet. Sometimes I introduce a new project to those who are interested, but mostly each individual works on items of her own interest, and we teach one another.
One meeting per month is devoted to knitting items for charity, the yarns for these items are donated to us. When our members are knitting items for them selves or their friends and family members, they supply their own yarns. For several years we knit donated blankets, sweaters, hats and booties knit of synthetic yarns to the premature baby unit of Hadassah Hospital on Har Hatzofim. When they had sufficient quantities of all these, we began knitting children's hats and house slippers, doll and teddy bear clothes for children residing in a battered women's shelter.
We share free instructions from the Web and share any books and magazines that individual members receive. We have access to a photo copying machine in the community center, so it is easy to make copies, and then our translating force gets to work.
Though we meet under the auspices of the 60+ Club, that name is a misnomer--it serves anyone over 50 (the directress explained to me that they don't want too many youngsters--in their 50's--hence the name 60+) In reality, we welcome all visitors--my 8 year old grand daughter visiting from Boca Raton learned to knit (from many teachers) at one meeting while she was visiting last year.
If anyone in contact with you would like to come visit us, I suggest that they leave me a message at home 5861523, or at this Email address sf_haya @ bezeqint.net (spaces added to prevent spam), just so I'll be expecting their arrival. They'll be most welcome. Those in our age range, who'd like to join on a more permanent basis, can get the information from me, or Bruria, the 60+ Club directress at 5864746
